The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of George Volker can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

George's Service

George served the City of Bellingham for many years as chair and member of our Board of Adjustment, Landmark Review Board, and Historic Preservation Commission.  His acting as chair for many years, as you can guess, was not easy.  He had to deal with angry and confused applicants and members of the public, and some of them are not kind.  However, his long experience in planning meant that he never turned a hair - probably because he had seen and heard it all before.

He set a good example for is fellow Board and Commission members, many of whom were not professionals.  He was able to lead toward decisions without being preemptory or condescending, allowing his fellow Board and Commission members to grow in their role, in turn creating better decisions for the City of Bellingham as a whole.  I hope the family can come and visit Bellingham and tour our various historic districts and buildings, realizing that George had a hand with maintaining the character and beauty of our City.

George also set an example and mentored many members of the Planning Department, advising us when we were frustrated, helping us write better reports and make better recommendations, and showing throughout how important it is to look into the future of Bellingham's development patterns.  I was sad to have him step away from the Historic Preservation Commission both because of our loss of his wisdom and experience, and because I would not be seeing him regularly as a friend.

I hope the family knows that George created and maintained many positive changes in the communities he worked for, and after his retirement his home of Bellingham.

Sincerely, Jackie Lynch, Planner II, City of Bellingham
