Obituary

Eli Hiram Okaruru, of Coupeville, died at his home on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
He was born in Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands, on January 27, 1980, to Edward and Mariana Okaruru Olaitiman. Eli married his high school sweetheart Marylou Moteisou in September 2005. Eli served as a paramedic in Saipan. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country with honor until 2017, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was part of an advocacy group, SourceAmerica, under Skookum Contract Services.
Eli loved to sing and played guitar, ukulele and keyboard with great proficiency. He was known to write and sing songs to his beloved Marylou. He was also a handyman, and enjoyed fixing broken things and making them useful again. Bird houses, chicken coops and trailers were among his handiworks.
Eli is survived by his wife Marylou; his two children, Ella and Elijah; and his โ€œother sonโ€ Max, a purebred Newfoundland.
Visitation was held at Whidbey Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, with Military Honors by Fort Lewis Honor Guard. Arrangements have been made with the assistance of Whidbey Memorial Funeral Home.

My dear nephew,
We all moved away and drifted apart during these past years. I am sorry, I am unable to come see you one last time to bid you adieu but we will all meet again - to sing, drink and be merry. The last time I saw you and the family now seems like it was just yesterday, and all those times we all hung out will be cherished memories of days of young, long gone. As I have stated before, you've come a long way and gone through a lot in life to leave this way... May you find eternal peace and may we heal from having you leave us too soon. My deepest condolences to Marylou, Ella and Elijah during your time of grief.

For the Skookum Team at Whidbey, Eli was an outstanding teammate and friend who quickly earned the trust and rapport with everyone. He was always willing to help anyone โ€“ really cared about people and had a lot of integrity โ€“ an example for all of us.

A great example was the GSA group in Auburn who were traditionally very tough customers โ€“ Eli quickly earned their trust and went the extra mile, they really liked him and looked forward to his visits.

Eli was a decorated combat veteran who answered the call for his country and Army team in very difficult assignments. Eli will be deeply missed at Skookum and we extend the deepest sympathy for his family.
