Obituary for Doris Katherine Janz

Doris Katherine Janz
Doris Katherine Janz, age 100, of Oak Harbor, was suddenly called home to be with her Lord on February 28, 2018.
Doris was born in Ritzville, WA to Reuben and Matilda Thiel on March 12, 1917. When she was four years old, the family moved to Tacoma. In 1935 Doris married Walter Janz, and together they raised their three children – Katherine, Wesley & Lois. She was a dedicated homemaker, and also provided loving childcare for several other families. These children along with her grandchildren, christened her “Grandma Dodo,” and that lasted a lifetime. Doris enjoyed sewing and knitting for her children and all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that came along later. She was life-long member of The Calvary Baptist Church in Tacoma, and had many dear friends there.
After the age of 50, Doris began exploring her artistic side, and eventually her paintings were displayed in various venues, most notably the Puyallup Fair for many years. She loved her time there, volunteering at the art displays every year. Doris’ favorite exercise was shopping. She and her friends visited the mall frequently, always looking for sales, followed by lunch – of course! Her other passions were knitting, sewing and doll collecting.
In 2007, at the age of 90, Doris moved to Oak Harbor to be near family. It was difficult for her to leave Tacoma and her old friends, but once settled, she continued her artwork, shifted to mail order shopping and began collecting owls of all shapes and sizes.
Doris greatly enjoyed her many visits from family and friends, and also appreciated ten years of weekly visits with the Sonshine visitors from First Reformed Church.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Janz, four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her three children: Katherine Morse (Larry), Wesley Janz (Viola) and Lois Heselwood (Gary). She is also survived by step-brother George (Hap) Smith, sister-in-law Marian Thiel, eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Regency Assisted Living for their loving care of Doris over the past seven months. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or Samaritan’s Purse. A Graveside Service will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Tacoma, Friday, March 16, 2018, at 1:30 PM. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories and condolences at www.whidbeymemorial.com.
